How to prevent hair breakage 101

Healthy hair is such a vibe. So we've compiled our top tips to help prevent hair breakage for healthy, shiny, frizz-free hair.
  1. Use a heat protectant styling spray

When was the last time you blow dried your hair, or styled it with a hot tool without using a heat-protectant? #Guilty. A heat-protectant will act as a barrier between your hot tool and your hair, which seals moisture and fights off frizz. We designed Mermade Mist, the world’s first heat-protectant spray that not only protects the hair, but also holds and contours Mermade waves. Our innovative formula is designed to reduce hair breakage by 75%, even when styled at a hot 230⁰C.

  1. Don’t blow dry dripping wet hair

PSA: blow drying dripping wet hair is doing more damage than good. When your hair is wet, it’s a lot more fragile, and applying direct heat will cause breakage. Not ideal. Pat hair with a towel until it’s 80% dry before blow drying for healthier, shinier, frizz-free hair. To further tame your mane, use a concentrator on your hair dryer to focus heat in specific areas and avoid it from blowing everywhere, which leaves it more susceptible to tangling and therefore breakage. Also, use a heat-protectant.

  1. Get regular hair cuts

We are no stranger to split ends. Sigh. And when split ends aren’t taken care of, they further split up the hair shaft and eventually break or snap off, leaving hair frizzy and fragile. Booking in regular haircuts with your hairdresser will result in healthier, thicker looking hair.

  1. Keep it hydrated

Quench your thirsty stands by applying a daily moisturiser. You can’t actually overdo the conditioning step, so apply a generous amount after shampooing – just make sure to avoid the hair root, which will cause the scalp to secrete excess oil. If you have really dry or coarse hair, using a leave-in moisturising spray will give you more good hair days than none. Find one that is suitable for your hair type and your hair will thank you. Whether you have naturally fine hair, or you haven’t seen your natural hair colour in a decade, we suggest applying a deep conditioning mask at least once a week. Again, find one that is suitable for your hair type, and your hair will be stronger and moisturised.

  1. Don’t wash your hair too often

Microbiome. It may not be a sexy word, but it is an important one. Microbiome is a community of microorganisms that exist in a single environment – namely your gut, your skin and your scalp. When you wash your hair too often, you aren’t allowing your natural oils to reset. This throws off the balance of the microbiome which can result in a dry scalp, dry strands and subsequently dry and damaged hair. Pro tip: set up a routine for washing your hair so your scalp adjusts to the quantity of oil produced by the oil glands for optimal hair health.
